ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES

BROTHERS ALI

Motown-born twin brothers Jimmy & Jerome Ali are cutting edge musicians who have diligently mastered the bass and guitar. Experiencing the original instrumental capabilities of these brothers will take your musical appreciation to a new level. Music is not what they do, but who they are. The band was formed in 2002 when Jimmy and Jerome reconnected in Las Vegas after separate careers around the US.

Jimmy & Jerome's musical talent was a gift to them, one they would like to share with music lovers worldwide.  Born into a musical Detroit family and inspired by musical experiences as young children, the Brothers began working with powerhouse musicians early.  Their resume includes Ronnie Laws, Kirk Whalum, Bob James and George Clinton to name a few.

Songwriters in their own right, the brothers present a wide array of songs written and arranged throughout their career.  A CD in the works, Brothers Ali has mastered a number of single projects for airplay.  In addition, to travel, the band performs locally, on and off the strip.

SHAPIRO PROJECT

Shapiro Project is a Las Vegas based Jazz quartet led by guitarist and composer Eugene Shapiro, a recipient of the Nevada Arts Council Fellowship in Jazz Composition.  It also features drums, keyboards, and saxophone.  Shapiro Project is a Jazz group with a fresh approach to the Jazz idiom mainly through new works written by Eugene Shapiro and the creative musicianship that gives their sound a ‘sparkling vitality’.

The band was organized by four UNLV graduate students pursuing jazz studies degrees.  Members of the Shapiro Project are experienced jazz musicians with more than 10 years of performing in playing jazz and commercial music all over the world and have played with many world known musicians.

Shapiro Project’s first CD "True Colors" featuring 11 original compositions written by Eugene Shapiro was released in January 2002. The quartet's second CD "Open Road" was released in November 2005 and features 9 original compositions. The music of the Shapiro Project ranges form straight ahead to modal jazz, as well as funk, Latin, and contemporary Jazz.

In Las Vegas, Shapiro Project and its members have performed at many casino arenas as well as played at numerous concerts series. "…listening to this ensemble…you will hear the musical spirit which will carry them to greater heights and the success they deserve."

DAVID VAN SUCH

You don’t have to search far on the music scene in Las Vegas to come across David Van Such.  Since moving to Las Vegas, David has contributed to the jazz scene in far reaching ways.  The very energetic and versatile musician has treated audiences to his unique sound for years.  Contributing to his success are his wide range of musical abilities to include electric violin, saxophone, flute, winds and vocals.  But the passion behind the instruments mark David’s wide appreciation by audiences both in and out of Vegas.  His current talented band members create an amazing sound through their extensive range and versatility as well.

Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Davis began classical violin studies at the age of seven.  The soulful sounds of R & B and jazz soon lifted David into its realm and drew him into playing its sounds on various instruments while still young.  After collegiate studies, David became one of the hardest working, diligent professionals to be found. David’s unquenchable thirst to reach new heights in his music has propelled him into a class few musicians will ever know.  David has worked with several groups and served as musician, song writer and conductor on live performance as well as his own CD projects.

David remains today one of the hardest working musicians in Vegas.  He plays on and off the strip, as well as across the US.  His unique style and variety of music tantalizes the senses and brings audience members to their knees.  David’s big instrumental sound combined with seductive soulfulness raises the jazz standard to new heights.

THE SACRED GROOVE

Count your blessings; we’re in for a treat!  This talented band of Christian musicians bring forth an exciting evening of jazz, gospel and R & B.  Armed with instruments and an impassioned heart for jazz, these musicians take stage and don’t let go until the final curtain. Cross trained in many different instruments and styles, the members of The Sacred Groove share a love of passionate music and their love of the Lord.  It’s their calling, they each believe.

Enter the stage:  Duane Murray on bass, Steve Collins on keys, Elder Jay Hall on lead guitar and Gerald Jones on percussion.  Their theme:  Passion driven by Power.  Their mission:  to entice audiences to connect with their inner souls and share an evening of joint connectedness through soulful music.

Steve believes family to his greatest strength.  Gerald declares that nothing can interrupt his rhythmic conversations with band members.  He jokes that he was born with drumsticks in his hand and a passion for rhythm.  Duane talks of spirituality leading him to aspire musically.  He feels anointed.  Elder Jay Hall speaks of a Christian calling through the strings of his guitar.  All agree that reaching audiences to feel spiritually glorifies their gifts from God.

EVERETT B. WALTERS

Don’t be fooled, there is no Everett B. Walters!  This is the name chosen by brothers Michael and Harold Brown, the combination of their middle names with “B” in the middle for the family name, “Brown”.  That’s where the confusion ends because once they take stage there can be no doubt that the sound they have created fills the air with the unmistakable hip blend of jazz, soul, R & B and funk.  It’s the refreshing ‘flava’ they bring to Monte Lago Village.

Born and raised in Chicago’s South Side, the boys were encouraged by their “Gran”, a music legend in her own right, to learn and earn musical greatness.  Through the family’s connectedness with the jazz music scene, Mike and Harold learned to appreciate the value of style, rhythm and discipline.  Throughout high school and beyond, they never faltered from reaching higher and aspiring for greater musical sound.  They demanded   no less from the musicians they worked with.

In fact, their latest CD, entitled, Always High Reaching makes the simple statement that is the group’s mantra.  Many of the group’s tunes are original compositions and reflect the brothers’ influence of songwriter Pete Merriweather.  Other CD projects include Very Best of Smooth Jazz which has received far reaching airplay.  One of the hardest working bands around, Mike and Harold never fail to find time for family.

BOBBY COTTONWOOD QUARTET

Bobby Cottonwood

Romance needs a jolt?  Well, you’re in for an evening of love and emotion when the Bobby Cottonwood Quartet arrives at Monte Lago Village. Inspired by Bobby’s long term association with the great Joe Bonner, and modeled after the stylings of Tony Bennett and Bill Evans, the evening promises a “romantic and nostalgic potpourri of love songs- sometimes mysterious, sometimes bittersweet” but all celebrating love and life.

Originally from Philadelphia, Bobby Cottonwood started singing at the age of 2. Moving to Los Angeles at 12, Bobby not only took with him the early Philly vocal influences but he was then inspired to turn professional.   He appeared with Dean Martin, Helen Reddy, Paul Williams, Tom Jones, and a score of others.  Additionally, he performed with the Rolling Stones, The Animals, The Yardbirds, Sonny & Cher and more.

By opening his own Hollywood jazz club, “Legends of Hollywood”, his roots in jazz started to develop, influenced by all the legendary jazz greats who performed there.  After selling his jazz club, Cottonwood moved to Sedona, where his love and loyalty to jazz allowed him to expand his musical abilities and the unique opportunities that the Northern Arizona music scene provided.   He brings to the Las Vegas stage a wealth of knowledge and experience.  Cottonwood’s two CD’s, "Smile" and "I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good" have been widely successful.

GENEVIEVE

Genevieve and Producer Scott Cannady

When Genevieve and her band take to the stage, it will seem as though Las Vegas has touched the universe.  That is, because of the wealth of experience Genevieve brings to her performances.  She’s been there, done that.  And she’s all that!  And serves it up with a smile.  As such a wide-ranged and talented performer, Genevieve has the luxury of hand picking her band members and this summer’s collaboration will not disappoint.  Soulful vocals, rhythmic riffs, the best R & B standards, passionate instrumental pieces mark the band’s repertoire.

Originally from St. Louis, Mo., Genevieve Dew began her musical career singing, dancing and acting while still a child.  By age 16, Genevieve was performing with the St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra, which propelled her into many varied endeavors but which ultimate led her back to her first love-- singing.   Her years working in the corporate world and traveling world wide brings a whole new depth to her musicianship and management.  While traveling and performing, she got the opportunity to play with some giants to include Johnny Hammond Smith, Nancy Wilson and Stevie Wonder.  Her skill at dancing and acting, in addition to singing, has placed her on some prime stages performing with interesting people, a real “who’s who”.  Her diversity and accomplishments has created a resume of considerable length and depth.

Genevieve resides in Las Vegas but continues to travel and collaborate extensively.  She contributes to the CD projects of other artists as well as producing her own CD, self titled Genevieve.  One of her CD projects, a tribute to the life of Billie Holliday, has landed her in the lead role of Billie in a one-woman stage show under production now.  She even travels with an Elvis tribute band!
