Eagle Point is Southern Utah's Newest Ski &  Snowboard Experience

by Steve Tuminello

Eagle Point offers five lifts with access to over 400 Skiable acres and 40 runs. The ski resort boasts the longest tubing run west of the Mississippi.

I skied the last day the resort was open during their first season which was a “Soft Opening” and was fortunate to have fresh powder from a spring snowfall. The first thing I did was meet with Lane Tucker at the upper lodge and tour that facility which offers lift tickets, rentals and “The Skyline Cafe” and quick access to the beginner and intermediate terrain. I experienced the “Tubing Park” for one long and fast run before heading down to the lower lodge to meet Shane Gadbaw, one of the owners and manager of Eagle Point. I had heard that the food was exceptional in “The Outpost Grill” and I was not disappointed. Shane's wife Kini recommended the Outpost Burger and the coleslaw. I requested Ice Tea and have to say this freshly brewed Ice Tea was flavored with just the right amount of sweetener and lemon. I haven't tasted tea that good since I was home in Louisiana and Texas. I was really impressed with the presentation and the gourmet style Angus Beef burger was cooked to perfection. The coleslaw was mayonnaise based, but with a touch of vinegar and had a very unique flavor. A great lunch and the quality of the food in the restaurant is not your typical ski resort fare.

After lunch I took to the slopes for a few hours of heavenly skiing in these ideal conditions and regretted that Eagle Point was closing for the season with these incredible conditions.

I noticed that the chairs on the lift were spaced further apart than most ski resorts making it easier to load, especially with small children. I am thoroughly looking forward to skiing Eagle Point next year.

Steve Tuminello reports from this amazing new resort:

I recently had the opportunity to spend a couple of days at The Grand Lodge at Brian Head. Brian Head Ski Resort on Cedar Mountain is approximately three and a half hours from Las Vegas.

It is a popular destination for Las Vegas residents and tourists, as well as many California residents and tourists.

Cedar Mountain is one of the highest peaks in Utah with the base at 10,000 feet. In my opinion, driving from Las Vegas and going past Brian Head to spend another four hours in the car to get to the resorts in Northern Utah is not worth it when you have such great skiing condtions only three and a half hours away. The only thing lacking was a Resort the caliber of The Grand Lodge at Brian Head.

Upon arrival at The Grand Lodge at Brian Head we checked in to a beautiful suite that was close to 700 square feet with a large dining table, spacious living room with a comfortable fold out sofa.

Our large living room window had beautiful snow covered mountain views and with the remote controlled stone fireplace it offered a very cozy atmosphere. The master bedroom was spacious even with the king sized bed and comfortable chair and ottoman. In the hallway to the bathroom was a large closet that easily held two large suitcase and ski clothing. The larger suites have the fireplace connecting to the Master Bedroom and a Jacuzzi Tub.

We decided to have lunch our first day at The Lift Bar & Patio. The high ceilings and water cascading down the walls offered a unique atmosphere with panoramic views.

I especially liked the antler chandeliers and all of the wood and stone. The large patio had a huge fire pit and two statues of a Deer and an Elk. Great photo opportunities! We ordered the gourmet pizza and prime dip sandwich which really hit the spot after the drive up to Cedar Mountain.

After lunch we decided to explore the Lodge and found the Weight Room, Spa and the Pool area.

We enjoyed the outdoor Hot Tub while having snow falling on us and then retreated to the Indoor Pool with waterfall and Hot Tub.

At The Red Leaf Spa we met the Spa Director, Amy Meyer. She gave us a tour of the facility and we relaxed with hot teas after enjoying the large indoor hot tub inside the Spa with a large window offering views of the mountain.

We really liked the two Aquatic Massage machines that were adjacent to the Steam Room which was one of the best steam rooms I have ever experienced. The desired temperature was reached very quickly and with a lot of steam. The steam room even had a shower inside to cool off in between the steam bath. The Spa also has a Dry Sauna.

In the evening of our first night we decided to experience Leany's Steakhouse named after the owner of the property, Mr. Leany.

The room is cozy and intimate with views of the snow covered mountain at various angles. We enjoyed the perfectly cooked  Certified Angus Filet Mignon Steak and Australian Lobster Tail and topped it off with a special dessert which was a churro filled with cheesecake filling topped with ice cream. It was delicious!

The next day we skiied under the best conditions I have ever seen at Brian Head Resort after three days of constant snowfall. We got our ski gear from Georg's which has the best equipment and the best prices on the mountain.

After a full day of skiing we went to the Red Leaf Spa inside The Grand Lodge for our hot stone full body massage and to enjoy the Hot Tub and Steam Room again. The Spa is open to skiers who may be on the mountain at other lodging or to day trippers who want to relax those sore muscles at the end of the day.

The next morning we enjoyed a big breakfast which is served in Leany's Steakhouse. Fresh fruit and juices, Belgian style waffles and an omelet. Just what we needed for another full day of skiing on “The Best Snow on Earth”

The following day we made the short drive up to Bryce Canyon National Park in about an hour and twenty minutes and it was absolutely incredible to see this natural wonder with snow capped steeples and continuos snow falling while we were there. With Zion National Park approximately and hour away and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon about two hours away The Grand Lodge at Brianhead is definitely the place to base as a Gateway to The National Parks.

Georg and Stefanie Hartlmaier became the first full time residents of the town of Brianhead in 1965. Georg was Brianhead’s first mountain manager and was director of the ski school during it’s first seven years. Sons, Georg, Jr. and Robby,
are now active in the daily operation of the family owned company.

Georg’s is the total solution to fun activities on Cedar Mountain and the surrounding area with Rentals, Sales, Service and Lodging for both winter and summer activities.

During the winter rental of Skis, Snowboards, Cross Country equipment and just about anything you could need for experiencing fun in the snow. Brianhead Ski Resort is located at Cedar Mountain 10,000 feet above sea level and the highest peak in Utah.

Many times Southern Utah has snow early in the season when the northern resorts are barren. Even though Brianhead is not a famous name resort it is catching on with Southern Californians as well as Southern Nevadans as the place to go for the best conditions and short lines on the ski lifts. In addition to the regional visitors to the mountain Brianhead has been a source of referral from the Hotels and Casinos in Las Vegas to the International visitors in Las Vegas that not only want to see the best “Shows on Earth” in the “Entertainment Capital of the World” but the “Best Snow on Earth” in the neighboring State of Utah.

When most people think of Utah, they think of Salt Lake City which is approximately a seven hour drive or an hour plane flight from Las Vegas. It is possible to do a one day driving trip to Brianhead and get more ski runs in an afternoon than you could could get in a busier resort for a full day of skiing. Southern Utah with it’s National Parks and Winter and Summer activities on Cedar Mountain is like a suburb or extension of Las Vegas. In many large cities you could spend several hours driving across town.

Georg’s can get you outfitted faster with better rental equipment at competitive prices on Cedar Mountain. You can spend more time on the slopes and less time waiting in rental lines. I purchased my ski’s and boots from Georg, Jr. last year and could not be happier with my purchase. Georg took a lot of extra time to make sure I had the right fit with my high performance boots and ski’s. I would rather buy from the professionals located on the mountain that know what your needs will be for the conditions.

During the summer you can escape the extreme temperatures of the desert by a short 3 _ hour drive to Cedar Mountain and enjoy mountain biking with a ride up the mountain on the lifts. ATV’s can be rented to explore the scenic beauty of this
Winter wonderland during the summer season. A complete fly fishing shop can outfit you for the many alpine lakes within a short drive of the town of Brianhead.

Not only can Georg’s outfit you for summer or winter with rentals or purchases of equipment and clothing, but they have Lodging available for small or larger groups.
The lodging is limited but gives you the feel of being in Europe with The Hartlmaier’s German heritage.
