Mega Bus Serves Las Vegas to Los Angeles for Under $30

by Steve Tuminello
Last weekend my daughter Natalie and I wanted to experience the new express bus that runs between Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Elizabeth Brower from Megabus set up our reservations and we were to be at the Gray Line terminal on Tropicana at Paradise at 6:15 AM on Friday morning for our departure.
The big new shiny blue bus pulled in right on time and we were greeted by our driver Steve, who is based in southern California. It was so nice to be able to load baggage and board without any screening process that you have to deal with at the airports and to be able to arrive as late as 15 minutes before your departure.
The interior of the bus looks very similar to an airliner with the overhead baggage, drop down movie screens and actually more comfortable seats that recline. The bus is equipped with a restroom on board and we did stop in Barstow, California for a 25 minute break. It was nice to be able to work and use my cell phone throughout the trip which cannot be done on an airliner.
We arrived in Los Angeles around noon at the Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. I was really surprised and impressed with this beautiful historic facility that is home to Amtrak and buses. It has an art deco feel to it and is in excellent condition with landscaped gardens and greenery surrounding the buildings. It puts you in a central location that allows you to be
picked up or use other public transportation such as Amtrak or the Metro light rail system to travel to your ultimate destination.
This is definitely an economical alternative to air travel that really only saves you about an hour and cost significantly more. I personally prefer to drive to Los Angeles rather than fly because I usually can be at my destination faster and be productive while I am traveling. The MegaBus takes it a step further by having someone else drive while you relax or work.

APPROXIMATE MINIMUM FARES
The fares listed below are APPROXIMATIONS only, and demonstrate the approximate minimum fare to the below listed locations. Time of day, route taken, day of week, and destination can dramatically influence the fare shown on the taximeter. The information contained herein was produced from sources believed to be reliable.

Sixteen taxicab companies service the Las Vegas valley. When you enter a taxicab, the driver will start the taximeter (referred to as the “drop”) and an initial charge of $3.20 will register. If a taxi ride originates at McCarran International Airport, an additional airport surcharge of $1.20 per trip is added to the taximeter. After the initial “drop”, the taximeter will assess a fare of $2.00 per mile ($.25 for each 1/8th of a mile traveled). If the taximeter senses that the taxicab is moving less than 8-12 MPH, the taximeter will assess a charge of $.25 (twenty-five cents) every 41 seconds ($22.00 per hour waiting time). That is why the taximeter continues to accumulate charges even when the taxicab is not moving. Once the taximeter senses that the taxicab is moving at a speed greater than 8-12 MPH the fare calculates on the actual distance traveled.
